Andy Pearce Joins The LJP

As well as the new recording project at Spatial Unity, Andy Pearce has been invited to play percussion for Scottish super funk band, The Leonard Jones Potential (LPJ). Andy is very excited with this opportunity, “finding good funk musicians to play along with is extremely challenging – LJP will help me liberate my percussion playing. I’m delighted“ .

Why not check out some of LJP’s music within their website www.theljp.com .

Electro Rock Surf!

It’s been quite a fun couple of weeks, in the studio. It is hard to find time but when we do it is fulfilling. Previously we would walk in with the strategy of having a song lyrics prepares etc and then record the foundation and build it up. However this time around we all take it in turns to come up with a riff, groove, idea etc and we record the foundation of the song in the one night.

Working to this “fun” type of pressure is a great exercise as our goal is to leave the night with a useful recording that can be built on. Only then do we look at the arrangements and then possible vocals lyrics etc.

The last session was fun as I started with a favourite James Brown style drum riff (that’s all). Then Caroline came up with as sweet bass riff for it and then Andy M did his usual magic. The result was our favourite track so far.

It is funny when you get different musicians from various genres and when brought together you get an amazing fusion. Just by chance, we are creating this contemporary electro rock surf sound. Very funky, slick and percussive; I can’t wait to get it out to the public domain.

Samples of new music will be emailed to our guest list when available. Take care and God Bless.

ALBUM REVIEW - Knock Me Off My Feet

A range of styles bursts from this band, from experimental electro-pop/rock dance tunes to acoustic love ballads, and a guitarist that shreds. The vocals create a pop foundation for the entire album to construct a tapestry of varying styles around them. In the vein of Bell X1, and for fans of Snow Patrol and Coldplay.

Track 1. “Knock Me Off My Feet” Definitely some 80s pop new wave influence here, in a new refreshing package. The synth/guitar riff is as catchy as the chorus, and if that doesn’t get you moving, surely you’ll be singing along.

Track 3. “Dream Frequency” Sounding primarly eurodance influenced, samples explain the meaning behind the title in a narrative style, almost a motivational speaker but more so a theorist. And that theory parallels the experiment behind the thesis of this band. Bouncing delays make this an experience that takes advantage of the oft-overlooked stereo mix. The album also includes a more club-friendly instrumental version that drops most the spoken word samples.

Track 6. “It’s Not Love” Heavy backbeat powers this funky upbeat song about a somewhat comparatively dark subject matter than most of the album’s themes. Beautiful vocal harmonies, and rocking rotary organ accompaniment.

iTunes Going DRM Free: What does it mean for you?

Jake Smith is a TuneCore customer support representative and editor of the TuneCore Newsletter
http://blog.tunecore.com/2009/03/itunes-going-drm-free-what-does-it-mean-for-you.html

After 6 years, iTunes has announced that they will begin selling their entire catalog without DRM protection. This raises a number of questions, and it is important to start discussing now what these changes could mean for all of us in the music industry.

DRM, or "Digital Rights Management", is proprietary code encoded in certain types of files to control where and how they can be used. If you've ever purchased a song on iTunes before and tried to play it on a different computer, a message will come up saying that the computer is not authorized to play the file. iTunes currently allows 5 computers to be authorized for any one iTunes account. DRM protection reaches much further than just iTunes and digital music. Movies, computer software, and video games often incorporate some types of digital rights protection. For example, DRM stops (or attempts to stop) you from ripping DVD movies to you computer or by requiring you to enter a serial number before using a new program you've installed.

From the stand point of the music consumer, there is really no downside to iTunes removing DRM protection. In addition to being able to move music more freely from computer to computer, music purchased in the iTunes store will no longer be limited to the iTunes library or iPods. Files will be compatible with Windows Media Player, non-Apple based MP3 players, video game consoles and more. From the label/artist stand point, the loss of DRM may seem good or bad depending on your personal philosophy. Does it help your career in the long run by making it easier for fans to share, or is it simply less money coming to you for your hard work?

Realizing that the decision to drop DRM protection would be a controversial decision, and in an effort keep ahead of the rapidly growing Amazon store, iTunes announced they would sweeten the deal for labels by finally allowing labels to set price tiers for individual tracks. We are waiting on iTunes to give us more specific information about this and we will make the details known as we receive them.

If you're looking for a more in depth look at these changes, I'd recommend this article from the staff of Macworld (http://www.macworld.com/article/138000/2009/01/drm_faq.html). Some highlights include:

iTunes DRM free files vs. Amazon MP3, which has always been DRM Free
What happens to music purchased before the DRM change?
Will the change affect TV Shows and Movies?
Reports say that this change will be taking place by June. What do you think about this? Was the DRM drop inevitable or is iTunes biting the hand that feeds it? Let us know your thoughts.

Sunset Connect Announces Its First New Signing

Sunset Connect Announces Its First New Signing at the Digital Record Label with the Signing of Spatial Unity

New York, NY, March 17, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Spatial Unity from the United Kingdom becomes the first Sunset Connect signing at the label. Spatial Unity’s forthcoming album is set up for release early this May (2009) and will be available at every major online digital download retail outlet in the world. The “Knock Me Off My feet” physical CD to be released by the pop act will also be made available at Amazon, Target and at the Sunset Music Store for sale to consumers all over the world.

Sunset Connect begins to set up its first new release with the Spatial Unity CD with a brand new video for the first single, “Dreams Come True” to be worked at FUSE, MTV and the music video will be able to view at all the major the online video outlets like You Tube and Music.com. The first single and a few of the songs off the “Knock Me Off My Feet” CD will be serviced through DMDS, a radio promotion company that works music to top stations tracked by BDS / Nielsen, R&R and all of this done electronically at Sunset. CD reviews for press outlets are also being worked electronically without any physical product through the Billboard Media Wire, Mi2n, New Music Weekly, PR.com and with iContact where Sunset uses its own media contact list. And, these songs from the debut CD were submitted to the Music Network, Rumblefish, Pump Audio and many licensing companies for requests that came in this week for the need of new pop songs.

Sunset Connect is Don Lichterman’s digital only record label at Sunset Records. “We have gone through a restructuring at the company in the last half year,” says Lichterman. “This is the first time since I started Sunset where I feel that we have total control to carry out my vision in the digital division.” The Sunset label head also transferred some of its signed artists at the label group, to the Sunset Connect label. “Honestly, this is basically day one in my eyes and this is the first act we are working through my system at Sunset Connect. And, yes, we have a great basis at Sunset Connect. We have to, however, begin to let things speak for itself so to speak, and that will take generating some hits over the next few years through a system like we have at Sunset Connect. Labels like Sunset Connect must actually break new music into the greater marketplace by working music this exact way for this to be a viable type of record label,” says Lichterman about his first releases at Sunset Connect.
